Composer’s program note:

The Introduction states briefly the two basic ideas from which all subsequent musical events emanate. The Fantasia is marked “spiritoso” and exploits in a brisk fashion both subjects announced in the Introduction. A slow middle section follows, presenting fragments of the principal idea in various solo passages. Eventually the marimba brings back the first subject in its original form, after which the syncopated chords prepare for the recapitulation of the Fantasia.
