Former Conductor, Sony Concert Band and Past-President, Japanese Band Directors Association (Japan)
Toshio Akiyama is an internationally renowned figure widely known for his contribution as the “father of the Japanese wind bands”. Having received his education at the famous Eastman School of Music, USA, Mr Akiyama returned to become the Vice- President of the All Japan Band Association from 1961 to 197 and President of the Japanese Band Directors’ Association from 1993 to 1997.
Having taught at public schools for 19 years, Mr Akiyama had also conducted the Sony Concert Band. In 1992, he received the International Award for his contributions to the band scene from the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic Mr. Akiyama now conducts the Ohmiya Wind Symphony and holds the position of Honorary Musical Culture Advisor for the Hamamatsu city. Mr Akiyama also hold honorary membership to several local and international band organizations such as the All Japan Band Association, American Bandmasters Association, WASBE and is also the Honorary President of the Asia Pacific Band Directors Association and Japanese Band Directors Association.
